Movies for the summer
There are a lot of good movies coming out this summer. I’ve missed several that I wanted to see in theaters, so I guess DVD will have to do. Here are a few of the more well-known movies I want to see (new and old) in no particular order:
- Transformers—I cannot wait (here are a few trailers).
- American Gangster—based on a true story, and has Denzel Washington in it… his movies are usually good.
- I am Legend—this movie has potential to be good, but it’s borderline dumb.
- I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry—looks pretty funny to me.
- The Bourne Ultimatum—I’m really looking forward to this one.
- Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer—as a kid, I used to draw silver surfer like nobody’s business, which naturally means I have to see the movie.
- Evan Almighty—looks decent.
- Live Free or Die Hard—might be too predictable, with too many cliche’ lines, but I’ll watch it.
- Blood Diamond—based on real events related to conflict diamonds and looks really good.
- Apocalypto—it’s so far away from the idea of being good, it might be good.
- Hannibal Rising—I’ve seen all of the others.
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning—I have a feeling this won’t be good at all, but I’d like to find out for sure.
- Knocked Up—mostly for Amie, but I think it might be funny, too.
- Ratatoulie—I think Amie is pretty excited about this one as well, and the animation always impresses me.
If I don’t catch a movie at the theater (or somehow end up owning the DVD), I usually don’t watch it. For whatever reason, we rarely rent movies. Here’s what I thought (briefly) about some of the major hits I’ve seen so far this summer:
- Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End: Really good, but you have to enjoy the plot. This one really played on the story more than anything else, and was somewhat confusing to follow. The others involved more “entertainment,” but it’s good in its own right. And it’s almost 3 hours long.
- Shrek 3: Exactly what I expected. It was good, but it’s a movie that I don’t really care about (I don’t think I’ve even seen the second one).
- Spiderman 3: I thought it was awesome. A lot of critics say there was too much going on, with too many villains, but I enjoyed it. I thought the sandman was great, and I loved the fact that venom was in it, too. It was arguably a little corny at times (Harry acting ridiculously happy and Peter Parker dancing to jazz music to, ya know, act “venomous”). I’ll buy it when it comes out on DVD for sure.
- Oceans Thirteen: I thought it was about as good as the second one (which was/is really good), but I liked the first one the most. Still, it goes by fast and it’s fun to watch. A fourth one would take it too far in my opinion.

First impression: this post must have take a long time to create, considering all the links :-p
I’ve heard really good things about Knocked Up, so you just might enjoy it more than you think.
Regarding movie rental: Sarah and I basically only rented old releases because we could get 7 for $7. Now, with the Blockbuster plan, we watch a lot of movies. We have the $9.95 plan which allows one movie out at a time – but the mailer can be returned to the store in exchange for another movie right away (and the next movie gets mailed out as well). It’s worth it even if you only watch two new releases a month, since those are nearly $5 a pop. Plus, every month I get a coupon for a free movie/game as well. We rarely see movies at the theater since it’s so much more expensive, and we’re fairly patient people ;-)

Whoa, I didn’t realize the Blockbuster plan was that cheap. I checked Netflix once, but that deal wasn’t too impressive (from what I remember). But I’ve never looked into Blockbuster (I don’t even know if they’re comparable) because I assumed they were one in the same. I’m usually opposed to extra monthly charges, but I may have to look into that.
You’re absolutely write about the cost. Hollywood costs $12 per movie for the both of us (we never get popcorn/drinks). It seems like we only pay 20% of the time, though. We had movie money for a few movies, and every now and then we catch one with the parents, who always insist on paying.

I just looked up the plans—definitely something to consider. The problem is, I’d probably still go to the theater.

Well, the theater is nice, yes, but I like coming home to a new movie to watch in the comfort of my living room with dinner and I can pause whenever I want. With the theater though, I’m quite picky and can’t justify $12+ on a movie that be “so-so.” There are very few movies that I’ve seen that truly felt worth the money – 300 being one of them.

Man… 300 escaped the list. I wanted to see that really bad. I heard on the radio, the day after it came out, it was a perfect “theater movie.”
On a somewhat-related-side-note, someone just IMed me something interesting concerning Transformers:
“It took approximately 38 hours to render one frame of the CGI animation to portray the Transformers. This breaks the record set by Weta Workshop for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002), where it took 20 hours to animate a frame of CGI to portray the Ent Treebeard.”

Yes, 300 was awesome. Although, the theater we were in was a bit run down and they had the bass up so much that you could hear the speakers rumbling – it sounded like they were going to explode!
38 hours for a single frame… it’s amazing that we never have enough processing power.

Transformers looks godly. It will be strange watching this huge mechanical monsters and having all the naff lines from the old show wizzing around my head (cue innappropriate laughter at the cinema).
Go see 300! Post haste! Then you can truly relish the bagillion parodies that never cease to get me chuckling.

Silver Surfer…not so good! :(
Knocked Up…pretty funny (& a little raunchy)!
Next up is Transformers…yippee!

I’m pretty sure Transformers will be the movie of the summer (for me, anyway). Bourne Ultimatum will be close (I hope).
As for silver surfer….... blah. Knocked Up was much better than I thought.
